7 Social Enterprise Jobs to Change the World

Are you interested in working for a mission driven company but not sure if you’re ready to make the leap?

August 11, 2015

Are you interested in working for a mission driven company but not sure if you’re ready to make the leap? We spoke with Julie Orr from Acumen investee BURN to get a glimpse of what it’s like to work at a social enterprise revolutionizing the cookstove sector in Sub-Saharan Africa. Scroll down to read about her experience and see what social enterprise jobs are available now!

What do you do at BURN?

I am the VP of Finance at BURN, but as with any startup, my job involves a lot more than the title leads one to believe. In addition to managing the finances, I also manage HR, legal, admin, sort out car schedules, buy birthday cakes….anything and everything!

Why did you join BURN?

I moved from management consulting to an NGO in South Sudan and now am working in social enterprise. For me, a huge part of development will come from building a sustainable economy. What social enterprises do is build the economy, whilst also providing benefits to the community at large. For example, BURN has created 90 jobs in Kenya in the past two years, whilst placing 70,000 charcoal cookstoves into households saving them money and creating a much healthier home environment due to the reduced smoke exhaust.

How would you describe a typical day at BURN in 3 words?

Long, Unexpected, New!

What advice would you give to someone looking to make the jump to a social enterprise job?

Think long and hard about what your motivations are.

You need the passion for the cause to enjoy the work and ride out the frustrations and challenges of startups, and the developing world.

Make sure you understand there will probably be a salary reduction, and you might not have the security of the corporate sector. But if you like a challenge and think it’s what you want to do, then take the leap!

BURN is hiring! Along with a number of Acumen’s portfolio companies. If you’re ready to take the leap, or know someone who is, here are some great social enterprise jobs to check out or share.
